Is It Expensive or Affordable to Live in Panama?

Panama, and particularly its capital, Panama City, is considered one of the most expensive cities in Central America and one of the highest-cost cities for living in Latin America. However, compared to global cities like New York, London, or Tokyo, it remains relatively more affordable. The cost of living in Panama can vary significantly depending on lifestyle, area of residence, and consumption habits.

In terms of housing, prices can be high, especially in upscale areas like Punta Pacífica, Costa del Este, or Bella Vista, where rental and purchase prices are elevated. On the other hand, in less central areas or in the country's interior, housing costs are considerably lower. For example, in cities like David (in the Chiriquí province) or in rural areas, the cost of living is much more affordable.

As for food, prices can vary. Supermarkets offer both local and imported products, and while local items (fruits, vegetables, meats) tend to be cheaper, imported goods can be quite expensive due to tariffs and transportation costs. Eating at restaurants can also be costly in tourist or upscale areas, but there are more affordable options at fondas (local diners) and casual eateries.

Public transportation in Panama is relatively cheap, with low fares on the Metro and buses. However, the use of taxis or ride-hailing services like Uber can increase expenses, especially with frequent use. On the other hand, gasoline is cheaper than in many other countries, making car ownership a viable option for some.

In summary, Panama can be considered an expensive city to live in compared to other countries in the region, but it remains more affordable than many global cities. The cost of living will largely depend on lifestyle and area of residence. For expatriates or people earning in dollars, Panama can be relatively economical, while for local residents earning in balboas, the cost of living can be higher compared to other Central American countries.
